Welcome to the summer edition of the Woodley Concert Band newsletter. In this edition, we will be updating you on where you can hear the Band over the summer, introduce you to the new committee & website, and give you hot-off-the–press details about our autumn concert.
Woodley Concert Band New Committee
Each year at the AGM (held in February) a new committee is elected. Following two years on the committee, Will Hughes (Chairman) and Rowena Horne (Treasurer) both decided that it was time to step down, and we would like to thank them for the commitment and hard work they have put into the running of the Band. We were therefore pleased to elect Andy Lowe (euphonium) as our new chairman and Pete Livesey (trombone) as the new treasurer to complete the new committee alongside Sioban Wilkinson (vice-chair, clarinet), Catherine Piper (secretary, flute), Elizabeth Chandler (oboe), Steve Stevenson (clarinet) and Phil Shaw (trombone). Both Andy & Pete have previously chaired Pangbourne Brass Band committee, and Andy has recently spent 3 years as conductor of the Apollo Big Band. Andy and Pete have already brought a number of new ideas to the Committee, which will be worked on in the coming year.
Around the band… Wedding bells, Welcomes, and Farewells
Congratulations to Rowena Horne (horn) who is marrying Mike on 28th May – we wish them well for their future together. We are pleased to have welcomed three new players to the band so far this year. Gregor Spowart (trumpet) has recently moved back to Reading and re-joined the band following a year’s break, and Karen Challis (alto saxophone) is playing with us for the first time. Unfortunately Karen Wiltshire (trombone) has recently left the band due to other commitments and so we are especially pleased to welcome Pete Livesey to the trombone section, and to the committee as our new treasurer.
Our autumn concert will feature music written for (or made famous by) the movies. The last time the band used this theme was in October 2002 at the Great Hall in Reading, where we featured music from Alfie, Beauty and the Beast, Saving Private Ryan and Lord of the Rings, along with many others. John Lawes, our musical director, is planning the programme for October and we have already booked Tania Pratt & Robin Colyer as guest vocalists. We would also like to know what you would like to hear - if you have ideas for music or soundtracks to be included in this concert then please contact John (0118 988 2526) or email the website.
With a little help from our Friends…
We would like to thank all our Friends for the support that you have given us throughout the year by coming to our concerts and for your donations. If you would like to become a Friend of the Band or become more involved in any other way, we would be delighted to welcome you. Please speak to Jill Hart or another member of the band at our next concert, email us or call the information line.
