Sunday 25 March 2007 will go down in Woodley Concert Band history as the day the band played to their largest ever audience - around 15,000 people. If only that number could fit into the Bearwood College Theatre for the upcoming "Classical Pops" concert on 28 April 2007.
The band was invited by Reading's independant local radio station, 2-Ten FM, to play alongside the Reading Half Marathon course on Sunday morning 25 March between 11.00am and 1.00pm. The band arrived from 09.00am, as there were the usual road closures to facilitate the start and finish of the Half Marathon. After setting up at the 12 mile marker, right by the final water station, the band were ready to entertain runners and spectators alike.
John Lawes, the band's Musical Director, selected a wide range of popular music, ranging from marches (Liberty Bell, Colonel Bogey), musicals (Oklahoma) to The Stripper!!
Always happy to please, the band played a number of requests from runners charging past, although by the time the band actually started the tune, the runner had usually disappeared into the distance. No doubt they were later told about their request by their friends and family who were gathered to support them, and to listen to the band.
2-Ten FM provided a team from their Black Thunder to make sure everything ran smoothly. The band would like to thank Mark for all his hard work in arranging everything on the day and making it a really enjoyable experience for everyone in the band. And of course thanks to 2-Ten FM for the invitation to play.
Having got the taste for the "Big Gig", the band is looking for bigger venues now - 2008 Wembley perhaps????
