Wow - what a morning! The Woodley Concert Band appeared at Green Park, Reading on Sunday 2 March from 11.00am - 1.00pm at the invitation of 2-ten FM, to play for the runners and spectators at the 2008 Reading Half Marathon.
Around 17,000 runners started, with just under 12,000 actually finishing, in the process running past the Woodley Concert Band who were playing just short of the Madejski Stadium finishing line. For two hours, Owen conducted the band playing a selection of rousing tunes to help the tiring runners cover the last half mile. Once again the band set a new record, playing "Is this the Way to Amarillo?" an amazing five times - all by popular request.
The weather was nearly perfect; if only the wind had dropped a little we probably wouldn't have lost quite so much music across the road but at least the sun shone and it was dry.
Most bizarre happening of the day - just as the band were packing up, a runner gasped up to the crowd barrier, asked for, and got, a lighted cigarette, and then continued on his way to finish in a position that nearly matched his running number.
Thanks to everyone who cheered and applauded the band's performance so enthusiastically, and a special thanks to 2-ten FM for inviting us to be a part of the day.
